Chemung County’s proposed budget for next year hit a snag Monday.
Legislators tabled their spending plan because of concerns about a possible $700,000 hole. The budget calls for an increase in the county mortgage tax, a plan that first must be approved by state lawmakers.
Chemung officials believe it will be approved, but they want to make sure they have a plan in place if it is voted down. It looks like the property tax levy would have to go up about two percent to make up for the shortfall.
The proposed budget does not include any tax increase.
The legislature’s budget committee will discuss their options at their meeting on Dec. 6.
