Firefighters extinguished a garage fire in Danby Wednesday evening. The fire at 1767 Danby Road/Route 96B was reported to Tompkins County Emergency dispatch at about 4:45 p.m. and was fully involved by 5 p.m. The garage, with an attached office, is near the Gunderman Road intersection and a short distance from the Danby Fire House. The fire was called under control around 6:10 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene and the northbound lane on 96B was still closed for several hours. The single-story garage was about 100 feet long, and 30 feet wide. The building is used as a mason shop, according to fire officials. The building and all of the equipment inside were determined to be a total loss, but firefighters were able to save the attached office. Firefighters from Danby, West Danby, Ithaca, Newfield, Slaterville, Brooktondale, Cayuga Heights and Candor were called for help. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
