Elmira is celebrating Mark Twain’s birthday this week.
Tuesday would have been the author’s 175th birthday. The writer of such works as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn spent summers writing in Elmira and is buried in the city’s Woodlawn Cemetery. The study where Samuel Clemons wrote under his pen name is now a part of the Elmira College campus.
Several Elmira restaurants are featuring some of Twain’s favorite foods this week and other events are planned, like famed Twain impersonator Hal Holbrook at the Clemens Center on Tuesday night.
