The Elmira Corning Regional Airport has been awarded $40 million in state funding for a state-of-the-art renovation. According to the Department of Transportation, the regional airport is responsible for about 50% of the Southern Tier’s flights and has not been renovated in about 25 years. Among the planned upgrades at the airport are bigger and more modern terminals which could accommodate larger aircraft and more passengers.

The planned renovations would also add additional security, parking, and amenities. While $40 million would cover a majority of the cost of the renovations, Chemung County would still need to chip in about $18 million. And while more formal drawings and a construction timeline still need to be created, the hope is for construction to begin in the first half of next year.
