Eight Elmira families were left homeless after a fire destroyed their apartment complex on Saturday afternoon.
None of the 18 people were injured in the fire on College Ave. City firefighters believe the blaze started in one of the building’s kitchens, but they are still searching for the cause.
Residents say the fire, smoke and water damage destroyed most of their possessions, but many of them were thankful that they survived and there were no injuries.
The Red Cross is helping all eight families with clothing, food and a new place to live.
