Elmira’s two hospitals held a press conference Wednesday to announce their formal merger.
The Arnot Ogden Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital will soon begin the process of consolidating into one healthcare system. Citing the cost of health care, leaders at both hospitals say it makes sense and will be a positive change for patients.
Officials hope their efforts will create more jobs in the future.
It could take anywhere from two to three years for the transition to happen. The New York State Department of Health must approve it.
Despite the consolidation, the Arnot Ogden Medical Center will stay secular and St. Joseph’s Hospital will remain Catholic.
The two hospitals have discussed a merger for several years.
