After the cost of an allergic reaction reversal medication, known as the EpiPen, skyrocketed in recent years, New York State policy makers and local emergency medical squads have found a way to continue saving lives while keeping costs at a minimum.
Check and Inject NY is a joint effort among multiple state agencies that launched in January of this year. The program’s goal was to eliminate the need for local emergency squads to purchase the overly-expensive EpiPen.
Through the Check and Inject NY program, squads would instead purchase a Syringe Epinephrine Kit for about $90. That’s over $500 less than the EpiPen. The kit includes a vile with a pre-measured amount of Epinephrine and a syringe to administer the measured medication.
Currently, 506 emergency medical squads across New York State are using the kits, with 21 of those squads located in Broome, Chemung, and Tioga Counties alone. A list of all the squads in our local area can be found below.
