An early morning fire Saturday caused heavy smoke damage to the Schuyler County Shared Services Facility in Watkins Glen. Authorities said a firefighter was also injured battling the flames. He was taken to a local hospital with a broken shoulder. Watkins Glen firefighters were assisted by Montour Falls, Odessa and Horseheads. The flames blackened several vehicles parked inside the facility.
The building houses the county’s soil and water conservation and highway departments, along with the village’s public works and street departments. The county administrator said while the damage is significant, they only lost one major piece of equipment, which was a plow truck.
Officials said that truck appears to be the source of the blaze, originating in a vehicle charging system. In all, about 40 employees will temporarily be displaced. Most of the workers in the county’s highway department will move back to the old facility, nearby.
Officials said services throughout the county will not be disrupted.
