The Ithaca City School District is paying thousands to a former student who was harassed because of her race. Epiphany Kearney, who was a student at DeWitt Middle School during the 2005-2006 school year, was harassed and racially discriminated repeatedly by a group of boys at the school. Kearney’s mother, Amelia, said the boys called Epiphany racial slurs and spit on her for several months during the school year. While the school says it disciplined the boys at the time, Amelia Kearney filed a lawsuit against the school, which is resulting in a $200,000 settlement. While the district’s insurance covers most of the settlement, Ithaca City Schools will pay $75,000 of the settlement.
