The Broome County Health Department has announced new initiatives to help local residents lower their daily sodium intake.
Broome County has one of the highest mortality rates due to cardiovascular disease, according to the Public Health Department. To help fight that trend, the county is one of five communities across the country to receive a National Sodium Reduction Initiative grant from the Centers for Disease Control.
The Health Department will use that grant to implement area-wide strategies that will hopefully cut the population’s sodium intake. Plans include revamping school lunch menus and teaming with local supermarkets to promote lower sodium options over the next three years.
The recommended amount of daily salt intake is less than a teaspoon of salt, or 2,300 milligrams.
