With the rise in heroin overdoses across New York state, officials are looking to provide state and local law enforcement with the antidote to reverse the effects of a heroin overdose. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced the Community Overdose Prevention Program, which will call for police officers across the state to receive kits with two syringes of Narcan, two inhalers of the overdose-reversing medication, along with sterile gloves and a booklet on how to use them. Members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Binghamton Police Department are already provided with Narcan, which they used in recent weeks to help save the life of a woman who overdosed. The program will be funded by $5 million of crime proceeds seized during federal and state criminal investigations. New York will be the first state to have the universal program.
