Newfield Head-On Accident Leaves Two Dead

On December 31, 2013, the New York State Police at Ithaca investigated a two car double fatal head-on collision in the Town of Newfield, NY. The collision occurred on ST-34/96 at approximately 5:02pm.

Iinvestigation revealed that a 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo being operated by James Crosby, age 19, of Van Etten, N.Y., was traveling northbound on ST-34/96, when he lost control and entered the southbound lane, striking a southbound 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee being operated by Samantha Aarnio, age 31 of Spencer, NY.

James Crosby was transported to Robert Parker Hospital for a leg injury while his passenger, Derek Nichols, age 20, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Samantha Aarnio was transported to Robert Packer Hospital for multiple injuries, while her passengers, Kathy Lattimore, age 67, was transported to Cortland Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased, and Eugene Aarnio, age 32, was transported to Robert Packer Hospital for an injury to his arm.

The investigation into the collision is continuing.

The New York State Police were assisted at the scene by the Newfield, Danby, and West Danby Fire Departments as well as Spencer and Bangs Ambulances.
