In the wake of the collapse of the Interstate-5 bridge in Washington last Friday, the New York State Department of Transportation is taking a second look at some bridges.
Three bridges in Binghamton have been deemed structurally deficient.
Every two years the DOT inspects more than 17,000 bridges in New York. According to their inspections, the Exchange Street, Page Brook and East Clinton Street bridges are deficient, meaning they received a state condition inspection rating less than 5, on a scale of 1-to-7. The earliest construction is expected to begin next spring on the Exchange Street bridge. The construction will include replacing deteriorated structural members, resetting the curb and adding a new bridge deck. Construction on the truss bridge is scheduled to be complete by the fall of 2014. The project is expected to cost $2.5 million.
