NYS football: 2 from Tioga, 1 from Broome to play this weekend for state finals berths

Along a roughly 35-mile swatch of land along Route 17C from Waverly on the west through Tioga Center/Nichols to Endwell on the east, each community’s high school football team will play this weekend in the NYSPHSAA semifinals on a neutral field at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

Waverly (11-1), Tioga Central (12-0) and Maine-Endwell (11-0) all won convincingly last weekend against overwhelmed Section 3 opponents (by an astonishing combined score of 146-34) to keep Tioga and Maine-Endwell on their quests for a three-peat – both won state titles in their classes last season and 2021 – while Waverly is seeking to make history in the football-crazed village along the NY/PA border.

With a smothering defense and despite an injury to its All-State QB, Waverly  dominated Adirondack, from Boonville, 49-8, on Saturday afternoon at Vestal High School, to advance to NYS Class C semi-finals against Salamanca, from Section 6, at Cicero-North Syracuse. Tioga beat Dolgeville, 56-12, on Friday to win NYS Central Region championship and a berth this Saturday in Western NY championship/NYS Semifinal Class D game against Clymer Central/Sherman/Panama, from Section 6, at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Tigers, a dominant Section 4 Class D team in the recent decade, have won three state titles. Read the full game story from the Valley Sports Report at

Another explosive offensive outburst and a shutdown defense by the first unit led the two-time defending NYS Class B champions Maine-Endwell to a dominant, 41-14, win Saturday over Indian River to punch their ticket to a third consecutive state semi-final game scheduled for 3pm Saturday in Syracuse. Spartans have seven state football championships, including a New York state record of four consecutive titles in 2011-2014. Read the full game story from the Broome County Sports Report at
