Owego-Apalachin School District Superintendent Corey Green proposed his budget for the 2017-2018 school year to the board of education last night. The $45.8 million spending plan includes a proposed property tax levy increase of 1.05 percent. The budget is still in its preliminary stages and is waiting for final numbers from the state. Green’s proposal includes program enhancements and opportunities to students like additional STEM courses, a greater focus on agriculture, and more elective and AP offerings for high school students. Green told the board they are also keeping an eye on declining enrollment in the district and using that to help guide long-range planning. The district is projected to have 100-200 fewer students by the end of the 2021 school year. The full presentation will be posted on the district website today. A final district budget will be adopted April 13 and go to the voters in May.
