Organ donor age requirements lowered in NY

New York State has lowered the minimum age required to be an organ donor. Up until now, you had to be 18, however, in a recently passed law, teens as young as 16 years of age can now sign up to be donors.

 

Governor Andrew Cuomo says that thousands of people in New York are currently on transplant waiting lists. With the passage of this recent legislation, its hoped that more people can receive the transplants they need.

 

The new law will go into effect in 6 months. Parents will have the option of cancelling their child’s organ donation.
