All parking garages in the state of New York will now be the focus of regular structural inspections thanks to joint legislation by local representatives Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Senator Tom O’Mara. The Department of State will draft the new regulations. Lupardo and O’Mara introduced legislation last year to require periodic inspections by licensed professional engineers after the collapse of the UHS Parking Garage in Johnson City and the closures of garages in Binghamton. That legislation was vetoed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, but he vowed to work with the legislators to come up with a different approach.
