Police are handing out tickets for New York drivers who don’t move over.  The Ambrose-Searles or “Move-Over” law went into effect in January 1st and in the Southern Tier, it is being actively enforced on the roads.  State Police are serious about making sure drivers move over.  Since the law went into effect State Police have issued 171 tickets in violation of the law.
If you see an emergency vehicle parked on the highway with their lights on, you are required to move to lane furthest from the vehicle as long as nothing is impeding your move.  This weekend a New York State Trooper died in the line of duty.  Trooper Kevin Dobson was issuing a speeding ticket in Tonawanda, near Buffalo when he was struck by a passing pick-up truck.  Police say if you can’t move over, the law says you still have to slow down.  A violation of the “Move-Over” law is punishable by a fine of up to $275 dollars. It also adds 2 points on your driver’s license.
