Public Health Emergency Declared Due to Severe Flu Season

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that he has declared a public health emergency for New York in response to the severe flu season affecting the state. According to Cuomo’s office, 19,128 flu cases have been reported in New York this flu season.
The state Department of Health says there have been 2,884 patients hospitalized with confirmed flu cases, compared to 1,169 in 2011.
The public health emergency will allow pharmacists to provide flu vaccinations to patients between the ages of six months and 18, according to a news release. Cuomo, who received his flu shot on Thursday, said anyone who hasn’t received their flu shot this year should get one.
