Saying they did so with heavy hearts, the Sayre Area School District Board of Education voted last night to furlough 22 staff members for next school year. Laying off nine professional staff and 13 support staff members will affect foreign languages, family and consumer science classes, and music programs in the district. The board said they were forced to cut staff due to budget pressures from new state regulations. Many people in the Sayre High School Auditorium were angry with the decision and police were called in to keep the peace. Student and teacher protests were held last month after the furloughs were first considered by the board.
