Senator Kirsten Gillibrand spoke at Ithaca College to discuss her proposal to reform the Family and Medical Leave Act. The senator’s proposal would allow anyone choosing to interrupt their work to take care of a sick child or loved one be paid a portion of their salary during their leave. The plan would allow for a worker to receive up to 66 percent of their wage while on leave, but it would have a cap and be indexed toward inflation. Gillibrand says a .2 percent tax on all wages could pay for the program. Her visit to Ithaca College was the first time a sitting senator made an appearance at the school in over twenty years.
