Firefighters responded at about 10:15PM Tuesday to a home at 300 Birch Street in Vestal.
Investigators said that food was cooking in the kitchen and had been left unattended.
Fire crews from Vestal, Endicott, and West Corners needed several hours to extinguish the fire.
Everyone was able to get out of the house safely; there were no injuries.
The home is a total loss.
