A slippery mess is in store for the region, with snow expected to change over to sleet and freezing rain by late morning, according to National Weather Service forecasts.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday for Broome, Chenango, Tioga, Cortland, Oneida and Madison counties in New York and Susquehanna, Bradford, Wyoming, Lackawanna and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania.
One to 3 inches of snow and a trace to a tenth of an inch of ice are expected today. After switching over to sleet and freezing rain, steady mixed precipitation will continue into the early afternoon and then diminish to areas of drizzle or freezing drizzle by 4 p.m., the weather service said.
Temperatures will rise to the lower and mid-30s, falling below freezing again Tuesday night. A chance of freezing drizzle and then snow showers will remain overnight, with less than a half-inch of snow expected.
Roads were covered in snow early Tuesday morning, although area police agencies reported no major accidents.
Area schools closed their doors this morning, as well as Broome Community College, which would have held the first classes of the semester. However, a public vote in Windsor on the purchase of school buses will still be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to Superintendent Jason Andrews.
