Teachers and students return to the Athens Area School District today following the conclusion of a strike which began on Monday. The Athens Area Education Association says that after having multiple informal conversations with community members, it was decided that it would be in the best interest of the community to resume classes today. The strike was initially called for after teacher contract negotiations had reached a stalemate. The last effective teacher contract for the Athens Area School District expired in August of 2013. Teacher contract negotiations between the Athens Area Education Association and the Athens Area School Board will continue next Thursday
The teacher strike in the Athens Area School District will lead to some scheduling changes this school year. This was supposed to be the week of the state PSSA tests for Athens Area students. The state testing will now have to be rescheduled. In addition, the district cannot guarantee a June 3rd graduation date for seniors.
