An employee of the Norwich City School District is facing a felony surveillance charge, according to city police. 28 year old Jonathan L. Aikins of Silver Street in Norwich was charged yesterday with second-degree unlawful surveillance in connection with an audio-video recording device found in a Norwich High School locker room. The arrest resulted from a complaint made by district officials and the resulting police investigation. At around 1:45 p.m., school administrators alerted police to the device. Aikins — listed in the high school directory as a teaching assistant — was arrested at his home at 3:30 p.m. People were present in the locker room at the time the device was there, the police investigation determined. Aided by the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office, police then executed a search warrant at Aikins’ home and also on items seized at the high school. Police declined to say what items were seized or what evidence was obtained. Aikins may face additional charges as the investigation goes forward, police said. Aikins was arraigned in City of Norwich Court and sent to the Chenango County jail in lieu of $1,000 bail. He’ll reappear in court during the June 7 morning session, police said.
