Residents in school districts across the Southern Tier go to the polls today to vote on proposed budgets for the 2016-17 school year.
In the Owego-Apalachin district, the proposed budget calls for a 0.9 percent increase in the property tax levy. The budget would add three teachers and a guidance counselor at OFA, a math teacher at the middle school and a teacher at the elementary level. Voting is noon to 8 p.m. today at the high school and Apalachin elementary school.
Residents in the Waverly district will be asked for 60 percent approval of a $31 million budget that exceeds the state cap on the property tax levy. School officials say the hefty hike is partly the result of a $1 million increase in health insurance premiums and a decision to keep the doors open at Chemung Elementary. Voting in Waverly is noon to 8 p.m. today in the lobby of the high school building.
Voting in Tioga Central is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the middle school gymnasium. A proposed $18.1 million budget will require a 7.6 percent increase in the property tax rate.
In the Candor district, residents go to the polls today from noon to 9 p.m. in the junior-senior high school auditorium. The budget is $16.9 million, which is 6.2 percent increase in spending with 0.8 percent rise in the tax levy.
We will have results on all of the votes tomorrow beginning at 6am with the WEBO Morning Show.
