The green light has been given to Aldi to build a new grocery store on the site of the former Treadway Inn Conference Center in Owego.

At their meeting last week, the Town of Owego Zoning Board gave final approval to the project, which will include the demolition of the conference center and construction of the new store.

It would be the first Aldi grocery store in Tioga County. The German-based grocery chain currently has locations in Vestal, Johnson City, Chenango Bridge and Athens Township.

The new store will be 19,600 square feet and will be located directly across Route 17C from the Grand Union Supermarket. Aldi previously attempted to put a store in Owego in 2017, but that project did not move forward.

According to the Owego Pennysaver, the project is expected to take 5 to 7 months.
