Village of Waverly officials could be cracking down on illegal cannabis stores in the near future.

According to the Morning Times, former Waverly mayor and current candidate for Tioga County Legislature Andy Aronstam said the village is working on a plan to deal with the issue.

The New York State Office of Cannabis Management recently inspected two illegal cannabis shops in Binghamton after several underage individuals reportedly became ill from cannabis gummies sold at the illegal shops.

The Village of Waverly began fining the landlord of the sticker shops $250 per day on April 1. However, the village is looking into other ways to stop the illegal sale of cannabis.

The illegal stores do not contribute sales tax to the village or county, and Aronstam noted that customers also don’t know where the products come from at the so-called sticker stores.

The former Mayor is encouraging residents to report any negative interactions with the illegal cannabis stores.
