The Campville Fire Department responded to a gas leak on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the fire department, the natural gas was free flowing when firefighters arrived.
Crews quickly established a secure perimeter, stretched a handline and evacuated nearby homes out of an abundance of caution.
Thanks to a fast response from NYSEG, the gas line was located, accessed and safely mitigated.
The fire department reminded residents in a Facebook post to call 811 before you dig. It only takes a minute and can prevent dangerous incidents like the one on Wednesday.
