Candor Mayor arrested for allegedly stealing from village

The Mayor of the Village of Candor was arrested on Monday after an investigation allegedly revealed that he stole over $23,000 from a village account for personal use.

According to the New York State Police, 67-year-old Eric C. Halstead has been charged with corrupting the government in the second degree, a Class C felony, and grand larceny in the third degree, a Class D felony.

Police said Halstead withdrew over $23,000 from a village account. Over time, he replaced approximately $19,000 but still owes money to the Village of Candor.

Halstead was arrested and transported to the Tioga County Correctional Facility for arraignment. He was released and is scheduled to appear in Candor Town Court on Aug. 5.

The New York State Police worked with the Office of the New York State Comptroller on the investigation.
