The former Candor mayor who was arrested last month for allegedly stealing money from the village appeared in court on Monday.

According to WENY-TV, the attorney representing 67-year-old Eric C. Halstead entered a not guilty plea for his client and asked the judge for a two-month adjournment, which was granted.

Halstead has been charged with corrupting the government in the second degree, a Class C felony, and grand larceny in the third degree, a Class D felony.

Police said an investigation revealed that Halstead withdrew over $23,000 from a village account. Over time, he replaced approximately $19,000 but still owes money to the Village of Candor.

Halstead resigned from his position as mayor on July 2, which was the day after he was arrested.

Halstead is scheduled to be back in court on October 7.
