Newark Valley Fire Station to be renovated, expanded

The Newark Valley Fire Station will be receiving a nearly $1 million renovation this summer. The district has been in the planning stages of this renovation for nearly five years, sending out requests for proposal, aligning finances to have as little impact on taxpayers as possible, and creating blueprints for the renovation as well.

As part of the renovations, both the fire hall portion and fire department portion of the station will be expanded. The expanded fire hall will include a new kitchen as well as more space to store chairs and tables. On the fire department side of the building, the expansion will allow for more adequate storage of fire apparatuses, an additional bay door in the rear of the building, a room dedicated to fire training, as well as the addition of a captive air exhaust system.

An exact cost estimate cannot be determined as asphalt prices continue to rise. All seven work contracts are local, with the exception of the captive air exhaust system contract due to a lack of local companies able to perform the specialized work.

The Newark Valley Fire District has received approval to cash in bonds, and pay off equipment loans to redirect that budgeting to help offset the cost for the renovations.
