Six people have been arrested following their involvement in a meth lab broken up by police on Tuesday. The New York State Police, Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, Owego and Vestal Police, as well as the DEA were all involved in the seizure of the meth lab at 704 Shirley Road in Newark Valley. The six people arrested are 23-year old Scott Cole of Newark Valley, 29-year-old Jamie Swackhammer of Newark Valley, 31-year-old Bryan Burkard of Berkshire, 28-year-old Melanie Short of Berkshire, 48-year-old Theresa Cochran of Caroline, and 23-year-old Kara Smithgall of Endicott. A search warrant was executed at the home of Cole and Swackhammer around 5 o’clock Tuesday night when authorities discovered materials consistent with manufacturing meth. Due to the hazards associated with meth production, the State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team was called to the scene, and were assisted by the Newark Valley Fire Department who maintained the surrounding area. During the search of the home, Cole attempted to flee to a wooded area behind the home but was found by State Police Aviation and K-9 units. All six subjects were charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd degree, a felony, and arraigned in the Town of Newark Valley court. They were sent to the Tioga County Jail without bail.
