A jury awarded a former Newark Valley teacher nearly $3.5 million in damages on Wednesday. Lyndsey Wilcox claimed that she had been improperly fired by the Newark Valley school district in connection with sexual misconduct by her former boyfriend, Todd Broxmeyer.
Broxmeyer was a private field hockey coach who was convicted of sex offenses involving the girls he coached. In 2009, he was convicted and received a 30-year prison sentence. Wilcox, who dated Broxmeyer at the time of the scandal and claimed to be unaware of the offenses taking place, was fired from her job as a physical education teacher and field hockey coach in 2008.
Wilcox filed a lawsuit claiming to be wrongfully accused of failing to report sexual misconduct by Broxmeyer. Following an eight-day trial, a six-member jury returned a verdict in favor of Wilcox, and awarded her $351,990 for lost wages since her termination in March of 2008, along with $2.1 million for future lost earnings and $1 million for mental anguish and emotional distress. Broxmeyer is currently serving his prison sentence in the Petersburg Federal Correctional Complex in Virginia. He is not due to be released until February of 2034.
