Just two weeks after Proposition 1 passed, Tioga Downs broke ground and celebrated as they kicked off phase one of a large scale construction project. Phase one involves building a three story parking garage with 275 parking spaces that will connect to the racino. Officials say the project will bring both construction and permanent jobs to the area. Then, if Tioga Downs is awarded the gaming license, phase two would begin. That includes a hotel, amenities building, casino expansion for table games, a new conference center and restaurant. But Tioga Downs isn’t alone in the bidding war. Vista Hospitality Group has plans to build a casino in Binghamton and just last week, Traditions at the Glen announced their plans for one in Johnson City. But Tioga Downs officials say they’re confident in their location. Tioga Downs CEO Jeff Gural said he has the biggest advantage of all the casino applicants. Gural said can convert to a casino in 90 days, the community is totally supportive, and they don’t have any traffic or environmental issues. Gural said their our permits and plans are ready to go. Gural also said that no one can argue he’ll be open two or three years ahead of everyone else. Officials say phase one will cost roughly $14 million dollars and construction on the garage should take eight to nine months, depending on the weather.
