BARTON – The New York State Police are investigating a fatal accident that took the life of a 4-year-old child in the Town of Barton on Tuesday.
According to police, the incident took place just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday on Old Barton Road in Barton.
A preliminary investigation determined that 77-year-old Barton resident Gloria D. Phillips was traveling on Old Barton Road when a child riding a tricycle entered the roadway.
During the investigation, it was determined that 4-year-old Joanna F. VanOstrand of Barton was riding a tricycle in her driveway before entering the roadway into the path of the vehicle driven by Phillips.
According to police, Phillips was unable to avoid VanOstrand and struck her.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
