UPDATED: An Owego Apalachin student was killed Sunday night in a crash on Route 17 eastbound, about 2.5 miles east of Exit 61 (Waverly-Sayre).
Owego-Apalachin Superintendent Cory Green issued a statement Monday afternoon that the district was made aware of the crash that “has greatly affected one of our Owego Apalachin families.” Green said crisis intervention teams were deployed Monday to Owego elementary and middle schools. The counselors will be at each school all week. Green said the district will not release any additional information out of respect for the family and until details are confirmed by law enfocement.
Tioga County Sheriff’s Office released this statement: On Sunday at approximately 6:43 p.m., the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a serious motor vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle on State Route 17 eastbound, approximately 2.5 miles east of Exit 61.
The initial investigation revealed the passenger vehicle, occupied by multiple people, was traveling eastbound when it struck a deer and began to decelerate. A tractor-trailer also traveling eastbound then struck the passenger vehicle in the rear.
The occupants of the passenger vehicle were taken to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., for treatment. One person in the passenger vehicle is deceased as a result of the collision.
The investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information about this incident, or who may have witnessed the crash, is asked to contact the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 607-687-1010.
The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, Waverly-Barton Fire Department, Nichols Fire Department, Greater Valley EMS, and the New York State Department of Transportation.
