The Owego Fire Department is raising public concern over continued delays by New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) in addressing a critical issue that is putting one of Owego’s most treasured historic buildings at risk.
The department has been attempting to coordinate with NYSEG for the safe de-energizing of overhead power lines adjacent to Central Fire Station, a National Register-listed historic property. This action is necessary to begin long-overdue roof replacement work that would stop further water intrusion and structural deterioration.
Despite multiple requests and outreach from department leadership, including a formal letter sent weeks ago, NYSEG has yet to provide a timeline or response. Each rainfall leads to additional interior and structural damage to the station, threatening not only the historic integrity of the building but also the safe operation of emergency services housed within it.
“Central Station is more than a firehouse — it’s a vital piece of our community’s history and our frontline defense in emergencies,” said Fire Chief Eric Hawkins. “Every day that passes without action puts this building and our ability to serve the public further at risk.”
The Owego Fire Department is urging NYSEG to prioritize this issue before irreversible damage occurs. The department is also calling on local and state leaders to assist in ensuring this critical infrastructure project moves forward without further delay.
