Fire Stations To Hold Open Houses This Weekend

Firehouses across New York State will be opening their doors this weekend, hoping people in their communities will visit and perhaps make a decision to volunteer.  Volunteer fire departments have been hard hit in recent years by declines in membership. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York is hoping visits to view the latest equipment and training techniques may help convince more people to sign up for a role as a firefighter or support position. Most fire departments are planning events for both Saturday and Sunday and will have firefighters on hand to discuss the work they do.
–       The Owego Fire Department is planning an open house for new members Saturday from Noon-to-4, including tours of the fire station, trucks, equipment displays and demos.  They will have members on hand to answer questions about joining.
–       The Apalachin Fire Department is planning an open house at their Station 1 on Pennsylvania Avenue Saturday from 10-2.
–       Campville will be open from Noon-to-3 Saturday, with their annual Pancake Breakfast to follow on Sunday morning.
–       The Southside Fire Company will be open Saturday from Noon-to-3, and their Annual Pancake Breakfast will be held Sunday morning from 7-to-Noon.  Breakfast includes all you can eat pancakes, pure maple syrup, sausage, eggs, home fries, orange juice, coffee, tea, and milk.  Children under 5 are free, kids age 5-12 suggested donation is $3, and adult suggestion donation $5. The Southside Fire Company is located on Waits Road in Owego, just south of Pheasant Hill Country Club. All are welcome to attend.
These are just a few of the events scheduled in our area this weekend.  Check with your local fire department for a schedule of events, call the Tioga County Fire Bureau office at 687-84-67, or just stop by your local fire station.
