Female leaders joined forces Wednesday outside the Tioga County Courthouse to announce the upcoming events for the women’s suffrage centennial. Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul joined Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Tioga County Legislature Chairwoman Martha Sauerbrey and the Broome-Tioga Suffrage Anniversary Committee. The icon of the women’s suffrage movement, Susan B Anthony, once spoke at the courthouse. This weekend the court house will open up for tours and visitors can learn more about Anthony’s message there. Organizers say it’s important to share the history of women in New York State, a state among the first to guarantee them the right to vote. The suffrage parade is also being recreated in October.
