OFA Boys' Fall in 3-OT Thriller

The Owego boys’ basketball team lost a three-overtime thriller 99-94 against Oneonta Wednesday night at OFA.
Senior Mark Merritt had 42 points for the Indians, two short of the school record, while teammate Stephen Yanchus chipped in with 33 points.
Three Oneonta players scored over 20 and the Yellowjackets rallied from four down in the final minute of regulation to tie the game. Owego’s Matt Warchocki hit a desperation 3-pointer at the end of the first overtime to send the game to the second extra frame, where the teams continued their back-and-forth battle before Oneonta pulled away in the third extra session.
Merritt played 42 consecutive minutes before fouling out with 3:05 remaining in the final period.
Richard Cooper holds the single-game scoring record for Owego. He scored 44 points in a game against Watkins Glen in 1953.
