After two and a half years of waiting for a new elementary school to take shape, the Owego community is starting to see the first signs of the new Owego Elementary School. Monday marked the first day that contractors began raising steel beams at the school, and by today, the framework for the school’s new auditorium is visible. Owego-Apalachin superintendent Dr. Bill Russell talked to the media today about the advancements being made in the construction process.

The new school is set to be about 120,000 square feet, nearly doubling the size of the former school that was demolished last year. The project is currently moving along in segments, with foundation done for certain parts of the building, which allows for the steel to be put up. Dr. Russell said that masons will be coming to the site in the next few weeks to begin putting up walls at the school.  He says that while many people have mentioned the progress at the school, perhaps those most excited about the new school are the students who will be occupying the building.

The new building is still scheduled to be open by the fall of 2015.
