The Owego Kiwanis Club is sad to announce the passing of long time member and treasurer Gerald Arbes. Arbes passed away yesterday at the age of 85 of cancer. Arbes was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army. He joined IBM in 1951 and held various assignments concluding his career as a department manager in 1981. He was co-owner and vice president of United Machine and Tool Company in Endicott. Arbes was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Owego, a board member of the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club and the Mildred Truman Faulkner Foundation. Arbes was a longtime member of the Owego Elks Lodge #1039 and joined the Owego Kiwanis Club in 1982. He served as treasurer for many years and took great pride in mowing and maintaining the lawn and flag pole area at exit 65 off Route 17 into Owego. Calling hours will be held Friday Evening from 4 to 7 at Estey, Munroe & Fahey Funeral Home in Owego. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Owego. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club – Raise the Roof Fund, P.O. Box 181, Owego, NY 13827 or the Owego United Methodist Church – Building Fund, 261 Main Street, in Owego.
