The Village of Owego has received a grant of $712,500 to be used for upgrading the Village’s Wastewater Treatment Facility.
The grant is part of the Chesapeake Bay Nutrient Removal Initiative, and comes from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation.
The Susquehanna River falls under the Chesapeake Bay initiative.
The funding is part of a $7,651,000 project to upgrade the facility.
The project is intended to help meet a required 60% phosphorous reduction target.
Additional aspects of the larger project will include: .
– Remove additional chemicals from the water
– Convert the existing anaerobic digester to aerobic
– Provide UV disinfection, and reduce the use of chemicals
– Demolish the sludge drying beds currently located in a flood plain
– Construct a Class A biosolids composting facility
The project will help bring the facility into compliance with the Chesapeake Bay’s Total Maximum Daily Load requirements.
