On Monday, Owego Town Supervisor Donald Castellucci held a press conference. During which, he asked the Town Board to hold a public meeting to discuss the possibility of making the Town Highway Superintendent position an appointed one, instead of elected. Castellucci cited issues with communication and accountability as some of the reasons behind this proposal. Yesterday, The Town of Owego Highway Superintendent, Mark Clark held a press conference of his own. Clark said that if in fact the people of the Town of Owego believe he is not the right man for the job, they can currently directly vote him out. Something they couldn’t do if the position is appointed. Clark went on to say that no matter the resolution to the proposal, the work of the highway department is still ongoing.
The town board will ultimately decide whether or not to consider Castellucci’s request. Their next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 in the Town Hall.
