After Owego village voters turned down two propositions by the village board last week, the Village Board has now authorized the Village attorney to write a proposal dissolving the Village police department. Last week’s referendum sought to eliminate the village court system, and convert the elected Clerk/Treasurer position into an appointed one. There have been previous proposals to merge the village police into the County Sheriff’s Office. Those discussions were put away temporarily while the village board attempted to pass the referendums. Now, this proposal is likely to be discussed at the next Board of Trustees meeting on August 21st at 7:00 PM in the village DPW meeting room on Elm Street.
