Owego Village Board considering ways to save money

Many financial items were brought up for discussion during a packed Village of Owego Board Meeting last night. Mayor Steve May says the village’s expenses are more than their tax revenue, so they have look at some measures to reduce expenditures. One of those lingering issues continues to be a plan to dissolve the Owego Police Department, but the village may have to forfeit a state grant they received to consolidate the department after failing to reach a buyout agreement with the village’s officers. However, the board would like to change the full-time Police Chief position to part-time. Also up for discussion last night was a measure to abolish the village court next year, changing the elected clerk/treasurer position to appointed, and outsourcing village payroll. Also last night, the village board heard a presentation from local business owner Ike Lovelass, who would like to purchase the village’s Central Fire Station. Village board members stressed that the building is not currently for sale. The next village board meeting will be held at 7pm on May 1.
