Owego Mayor Ed Arrington says he is finding it hard to garner enough support to approve a deal to sell the village’s treated water to a natural gas drilling company.
Inflection Energy wants to purchase up to 200,000 gallons of water per day from the village at a cost of 5 cents per gallon. Mayor Arrington says the 10-year deal could potentially mean $36 million for the village.
It is currently undergoing a State Environmental Quality Review to determine its impact on the environment. There is no word on how long that will take.
The Inflection Energy proposal was first presented to the board last month. Arrington has continually pointed to the financial benefits of the deal, but some village residents and anti-hydrofracking groups have criticized it.
Specifics of the contract have not been released. The board’s next meeting is Monday at 7pm.
