The Village of Owego Board of Trustees will move forward with hiring a part-time police chief after they formally accepted the retirement of current full-time police chief Karen Vinti at their meeting last night. Vinti’s last day will be June 19 and the board hopes to have a new part-time chief in place before she retires. The next chief will have to be hired off the civil service list or provisionally appointed until a new test can be offered. Also last night, the board announced that they will consider legislation in June to dissolve the village court and change the elected clerk/treasurer position to appointed for next year. Since both require changes to the village charter, they could be subject to a referendum vote.
