Repairs began on Saturday for a leak in the major natural gas pipeline through the Southern Tier. The leak was discovered by pipeline workers at a site off Schneider Road in the Town of Owego, near the Tioga-Broome county line.
Crews from Millenium Pipeline and Columbia Gas Transmission began work on Saturday morning. The process included a controlled release of gas.
Emergency crews were on standby and road blocks were set up near the site to eliminate passing cars as an ignition source.
The gas venting was completed without incident.
Repairs on the pipeline are expected to be complete early this week.
The pipeline has been in operation since 2008 and carries natural gas between Corning and Ramapo, NY.
